The Ask

The freight trucking world is complex, with many different payment scenarios. Diesel purchases are often done via credit card, while lumper payments (paying laborers who load/unload cargo) are typically done through cash or COMCHEKs—specialized checks from COMDATA.

Onramp is a startup aiming to automate payments and optimize efficiency and security across the freight ecosystem. In 2020, we worked with founder and CEO Michael Morris to design UX for their first product concepts.

The Process

All designs and interactive prototypes were created in Figma, with demonstration videos produced in Adobe Premiere Pro.

FuelPay: The flagship feature rewards freight drivers for fueling at partner stations like Love's and Pilot Flying J. We designed a mobile flow where truckers plan their route on a map, get directed to participating stations, refill their diesel or reefer fuel, and complete the transaction through the app. Rewards might include gift cards, free food, showers, and other truck stop perks.

Lumper Payments: A lumper is a laborer who loads or unloads cargo at the destination—often an independent contractor paid by the freight driver. These workers typically want cash or COMCHEKs. We designed flows for both sides: the fleet/driver initiating payment, and the lumper receiving it via SMS or email.

The Outcome

We delivered complete Figma designs covering both FuelPay and lumper payment flows, with screens for all user types and scenarios. The interactive prototypes and video walkthroughs gave Onramp tangible assets for user testing and investor conversations as they developed their vision for modernizing freight payments.

What the Client Says

Karina joined our fintech startup as one of the first team members and helped shape the UX direction for our trucking payment platform. Her ability to translate complex payment flows into simple, driver-friendly interfaces was invaluable.
